Farmington Hills firefighters are planning a Thursday, May 9, smoke alarm blitz.
For eight hours, they’ll visit local homes to install hundreds of smoke alarms at no cost to residents.
It’s part of their campaign to prevent fires from blazing out of control. Grant funding and partnerships with state agencies are behind the blitz.
Fire officials say Michigan experienced an increase in fire-related deaths in 2018 and four of those deaths happened in Farmington Hills.
So far in 2019, firefighters have installed 86 alarms. They want to help people in need and others who may not have smoke alarms.
They recommend smoke alarms on each level of homes, in every bedroom and hallway and in all other living areas.
Residents are asked to call the City of Farmington Hills Fire Department at 248-871-2800 if they have questions or need help with smoke alarm installations.
