    PREVENTING CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

    • Service all heating systems and all gas-, oil- or coal-burning appliances by a technician annually.

    • Install a battery-operated and electric-powered carbon monoxide detector in your home and check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. If the detector sounds, leave your home immediately and call 911.

    • Contact a doctor if you believe you have carbon monoxide poisoning.

    • Do not use gas-powered devices such as a generator, grill or stove inside your home, basement or near a near a window or door. Generators should be operated more than 15 feet from the home.

    • Do not run any gas-powered motor inside a closed structure, such as a garage.

    • Do not heat a home with a gas oven.

      Novi woman dies in early Monday condo fire

      A Novi woman and her two small dogs died in an early Monday morning condo fire along East Glen Haven Circle. Fire Chief Jeff Johnson said firefighters went to the Country Place Condominiums northwest of Meadowbrook and Eight Mile roads after a 911 call was made at 2:06 a.m. on April 5. They saw smoke and flames through the front window.

      Local 21 regrets to announce the passing of retired Firefighter Richard “Dick” Thoemke. Firefighter Thoemke started with the Saint Paul Fire Department on June 16, 1958 and retired in 1983.  He was one of three brothers that were on the Fire Department.       Just before 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 11, 2021, 911 callers reported that a vehicle traveling northbound on Interstate 25 left the highway and flipped over at Castle Pines Parkway. Local members from Engine and Medic 36 were first to arrive, they found the single occupant of the vehicle trapped inside and began medical treatment.

      At 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2021, Local members responded to a traffic collision involving a structure at 16737 E. Auburn Hills Dr. in Parker. When members arrived, they found a SUV that struck the side of a garage with damage to the structure. One person was treated and transported to the hospital with serious injuries, thankfully no one inside the building was injured.

      At 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2021, Local members and firefighters from Franktown Fire Protection District responded to a reported structure fire on Arapahoe Court in the Pinery Community within Douglas County. Members from first arriving Engine 43 found heavy smoke coming from the home and identified a fire in the basement.

      At 7:02 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, Local members responded to a reported structure fire in the 3600 block of E. Phillips Circle in Centennial. When members arrived, they observed smoke coming from the garage. Members advanced a hose line and quickly controlled a fire in the garage while additional crews searched the interior of the home and confirmed that no fire extended inside.

A fire fighter who dedicated his life to the labor movement, Brother Whitehead passed away September 4, Labor Day weekend. “He was a great union leader,” says General President Edward Kelly.

      At 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2021, Local members responded to an outbuilding fire on Forest Canyon Drive in Douglas County. When members arrived, they encountered a 45x38 wood frame structure fully engulfed in flames with the surrounding vegetation and a large propane tank threatened.
