  • Farmington Hills firefighters Fight for Air
    Posted On: Mar 79, 2017

On Feb. 26, six members of the Farmington Hills Fire Department participated in the Fight for Air Climb at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center.

The Fight for Air Climb, a signature fundraising event for the American Lung Association, is held in prominent skyscrapers across the country, giving participants the opportunity to join friends, family and co-workers as they climb the stairs to the top of the building.  Detroit’s Fight for Air Climb has been taking place for eight years and Farmington Hills firefighters have been there since the beginning.

In 2016, more than 30,000 participants from 51 Fight for Air Climb events across the country raised more than $8 million to support the mission of the American Lung Association.  Collectively, Fight for Air Climbs to date have raised more than $40 million toward research, patient education and advocacy efforts.

Given their increased risk for lung disease, including lung cancer, Farmington Hills firefighters are proud to support this extraordinary event and get a great workout at the same time.  Detroit’s climb involves 71 flights of stairs and 1,050 steps, with firefighters making the ascent in full turnout gear and self-contained breathing apparatus that weighs more than 55 pounds.

This year’s event was dedicated to WJBK-TV (Channel 2) anchor, Milford firefighter and longtime Fight for Air Climb Master of Ceremonies Ron Savage, who recently died during fire department training.

    Paw Watch

The Farmington Hills Police Department is introducing a new program, Paw Watch,  for crime prevention that encourages dog walkers to take an active role in preventing crime. The objectives of this program are to reinforce police-community partnership, improve suspicious circumstance reporting and encourage responsible dog ownership.
The Farmington Hills Police Department is inviting resident dog owners to become the “eyes and ears” of the community by joining Paw Watch. Residents are provided free training in methods to observe and report suspicious criminal activity, which helps keep our community safe.

Sign up for a free training class with the Farmington Hills Police Department Crime Prevention Section. This class will focus on providing residents with helpful information on how to effectively observe and report criminal and suspicious activity. Contact Crime Prevention at 248-871-2750.

    Seeking paid-on-call firefighters

The Farmington Hills Fire Department is seeking candidates for the position of paid-on-call firefighter.  This is a part-time, paid position within the department that offers many rewards.

Paid-on-call firefighters typically respond to emergencies evenings and weekends.  Once trained, they are part of the highly acclaimed Farmington Hills Fire Department and will respond to medical emergencies, extinguish fires, participate in fire prevention activities, receive continuous training and enjoy the personal satisfaction that comes from helping others in the community.

There will be an informational meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, at Fire Station No. 5, 31455 W. 11 Mile Road (at the southwest corner of 11 Mile and Orchard Lake roads on the Farmington Hills City Hall campus.)

For more information, contact the Farmington Hills Fire Department at 248-871-2800 or Fire Capt. James Donovan at 248-331-7337.

    Seeking volunteer nominations

The Farmington Hills/Farmington Commission on Children, Youth and Families is sponsoring its annual Volunteer Recognition Program. The commission recognizes how important volunteers are to your organization and needs your help in identifying individuals, youth or adults, families, organizations or businesses who are essential parts of our communities.

The event, "Inspire by Example," will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 8, at Farmington Hills City Hall, 31555 11 Mile. The recipients of the George Romney Award and the Outstanding Public Servant will also be honored.

All forms need to be returned to the attention of Kitty Ostach, either by mail to 28600 11 Mile Road, Farmington Hills, MI 48336, fax 248-473-1801 or email costach@fhgov.com no later than Friday, March 31. Go to www.cyf.us  for more information or call Ed Cherkinsky at 248-661-5114 or email echerkinsk@aol.com.  We are looking forward to receiving your response(s) by Friday, March 31.
