  • Resident looking to raise donations for historic fire truck
    Updated On: Apr 96, 2017

Livonia resident Vahan Nazarian will always find a way to bring up the 1953 American LaFrance fire truck.

Now, he's looking to bring in more donations for its continued restoration through photography.

Nazarian said he is providing a souvenir print of the vintage fire truck to anyone who donates $50 toward its restoration and upkeep. Those who mail a donation to the Livonia mayor's office can provide their contact information and he'll send them a print of the fire truck at an open house event from several years ago.

The truck was purchased several years ago by the Livonia Historical Commission and can be found on display at several events throughout the year, including Passport to Safety and the fire department anniversary event last summer at Rotary Park.

One portion of the project he'd like to get complete is the correcting of some painting of the words "Livonia Fire Department" onto the side.

"We may have to repaint the doors first," he said. "I don't know, we'll see."

Nazarian currently has a display in the Robert and Janet Bennett Library of photos, mostly of vehicles but several of some local landmarks such as the Alexander Blue House at Greenmead, as well as photos of vehicles in the vast collection owned by former "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno. The exhibit, up at the gallery on the second floor of the library, is on display until the end of this week.

A photographer since 1968, Nazarian said he's created many types of photos over the years, including the one of the fire truck, which is also on display in the gallery.

He's hoping he'll be able to make several if enough donations come in. Donations can be mailed at the mayor's office at city hall, which is located at 33000 Civic Center Dr., Livonia, MI 48154.

"I'll just make a print for them," he said. "Hopefully, we get more than one respondent
